Easy to make... (Elle, 1955)

 

Once again I feel like posting something for the benefit of the dressmakers who read my blog.  The pattern below is from the August 21st 1955 issue of Le Petit Echo de la Mode, and is for an autumn  dress that is "Easy to make, Easy to Wear".

Translated from the French:

A fancy or plain woollen material will preferably be used to make this. Its length: 2 metres 25 cm in material 140 cm. wide, or 3 metres, 45 cm in material 90 cm. wide.

1.  PREPARE YOUR PATTERN.  The plan below is drawn on a graph paper with each square representing 1 cm.  It is thus easy to prepare the pattern in real size on strong paper with a 1 cm. grid. This pattern has 12 pieces.

Bodice: the front, the back, its neckline, the sleeve, its lapel, its back and front gussets, the facing.
 
Skirt: the front, the back and the ribs, the belt, the bottom of the pocket above and below.

     2. CUT YOUR FABRIC after having arranged and pinned each piece of your enlarged pattern onto the double-folded fabric, width wise.

Pin the middle of the back neckline of the bodice, the middle of the front of the skirt, the middle of the waistband with straight thread without sewing to the pile. Cut the sleeve cuffs that need to be doubled twice, and cut the sleeve gussets on the bias and double. When cutting, be sure to reserve extra: seams tucked in, hems not counted.

 3.       ASSEMBLE AND SEW.  First, assemble the front and back of the bodice after having placed the gussets on the front and back, and making the darts and small neckline pleats. Place the neckline band on the back and at the edge of the fronts (after making, on the right, the edged buttonholes), the facing then connected with the neckline bung. Double the cuff of the sleeve, cast it on. For the skirt, place and assemble on the wrong side, the short side of the pocket bottom on each side of the front and form the fold at the waist. Tuck it inside the skirt. Then assemble the long side of the pocket bottom which at the same time forms the front side of the skirt. Shape, build, then stake up to 25 cm. Around the bottom of the back fold of the skirt, make the waist darts. Assemble front and back using the side seams. Make the hem.

     4. TO FINISH, attach the skirt to the bottom of the bodice, taking care to match their middles. To make the dress easier to put on, open the left seam at the bodice and skirt and attach a zipper. Prepare the belt, pass it through a loop covered in the same fabric. Place the buttons on the left front. Place small rounded shoulder pads made for kimono sleeves on each shoulder.

Un lainage fantaisie ou uni sera utilisé de préférence pour sa confection. Son métrage: 2. m. 25 en 140 ou 3 m. 45 en 90

1. PREPAREZ SON PATRON. D’après le plan ci-dessous rèduit au dixiéme et desiné sur un fond quadrillé dont chaque carreau figure 1 cm., il est ainsi facile de préparer le patron à grandeur réelle sur papier fort quadrillé à 1 cm. Ce patron comporte 12 piéces.

Corsage: le devant, le dos, son encolure, la manche, son revers, ses souffiets dos et devant, la parmementure.

Jupe: le devant, le dos et les côtes, la ceinture, le fond de poche dessus et dessous.

2. COUPEZ VOTRE TISSU après avoir disposé et épinglé chaque pièce de votre patron agrandi sur le tissu plié en double, sens largeur.

Epinglez sur la pilure le milieu de l’encolure dos du corsage, le milieu du devant de la jupe, le milieu de la ceinture droit fil sans couture. Coupez en double, deux fois, les revers de manche qui doivent être doublés et coupez en plein biais et en double les soufflets de la manche. En coupant, ne manquez pas de réserver en plus: coutures rentrés, ourlets no comptés.

3. BATISSEZ ET COUSEZ. D’abord, assemblez le devant et le dos du corsage aprés avoir posé les soufflets aux devants et au dos, et exécution des pinces et des petits plis d’encolure. Posez au dos la bande d’encolure et au bord des devants (après exécution, à droite, des boutonnières bordées), la parementure ensuite raccordée avec la bonde d’encolure. Doublez le revers de la manche, montez-le. À la jupe, posez et assemblez sur l’envers, le petit côté du fond de poche de chaque côté du devant et formez le pli à la taille. Rentrez ca fond à l’intérieur de la jupe. Assemblez ensuite au premier le grand côté du fond de poche qui forme en même temps le côté du devant de la jupe. Formez, bâtissez, puis piquez jusqu’à 25 cm. Environ du bas le pli du dos de la jupe, faites les pinces de taille. Assemblez devant et dos par les coutures de côtés. Faites l’ourlet.

4. POUR TERMINER, mantez la jupe au bas du corsage en prenant soin de faire correspondre leurs milieux. Pour faciliter l’enfilage de la robe, ouvrez la couture de gauche au corsage et à la jupe et posez une fermeture à glissière. Préparez la ceinture, passez-la dans une boucle gainée ce même tissu. Posez les boutons au devant gauche. Pasez sur chaque épaule de petites épaulettes arrondies spéciales pour le kimono.
