These pictures come David Jones's Autumn and Winter catalogue of 1951. David Jones was (and is!) an upmarket department store, and its catalogues were aimed at its country customers. The clothes advertised inside would have been good quality, but fairly conservative in style.
Apart from that I don't have much to say about the fashions below. Let the pictures speak for themselves.
JAEGER coats box or belted style, all fully-lined
These beautifully tailored coats are made in camel-coloured wool and fully lined with good quality lining. In cosy "Jaeger" with easy-fitting raglan sleeves, you'll be ready for the coldest winter. Each has vent back.
An adaptable suit in a useful medium weight tweed with fully lined coat and rounded lapels. The skirt achieves slimness by skillful grouping of front pleats and plain back.
Imported gabardine specially tailored for David Jones
A classic suit, made here by a London tailor, coat is lined, slim pleated skirt.
Two new styles in boucle jersey with crisp white embroidery.
Wineberry dress, above left
Shirtwaist style dress has two unpressed box pleats in front and a three-gored back. Attractive slit-pocket effect each side of skirt. Wineberry or pale blue.
Royal blue dress, above right
Boucle jersey is soft and cosy—the ideal 'tween season's wear. This dress has a Peter Pan collar and the new rounded pockets.
Coats, suits and dresses would have been the basics of any formal day wardrobe. The catalogue also had lots of pictures of colourful separates, which would probably have been worn at home.
Interestingly, by the middle of the decade David Jones stopped publishing pages of full colour photographs like this in its catalogues, moving to duller-but-cheaper black and white photography instead. It would be well into the 1960s before the store started splashing colour across its pages again.
