Let's take a look at another issue of Australian Home Journal—this time from the war years. As usual it's full of advice for women who are both fashion-conscious and budget-aware.
Dearer Materials.
Quite a number of mothers are wondering if the dress materials will be dearer this season. Yes, they will be dearer, there is no question of that, and they must remain dear for a long time. Exchange, freights and war risks have added to the cost of all imported goods, and Australian-made materials are also advancing in price.
World War II is only a few months old, but it's already having an effect on prices. Things will only get worse in the coming years.
In March 1940, however, there was still room for some frivolity.
Coats and Jackets.
Coats come in diverse styles. Sometimes they are ample and fall in smart swagger, in other instances they adopt redingote style moulding the figure, then again they suggest a suit and occasionally they have a bolero-like upper section.
The jackets of suits too are widely different. Short jackets, long ones, fitting and straight paletots—all these types are in fashion and are being worn.
Sham Jewellry
Wear sham jewellry, lots of it and in large pieces. That is the fashion for Autumn. The beauty of this type of ornamentation is that everyone can purchase it. The true test will be the daring and original types chose and the manner in which they are combined with costumes.
The Australian Home Journal was just as likely to look to Hollywood for fashion inspiration as to Paris.
Film Fashion Flashes
Soft feminine notes are being introduced once again into the cut of Hollywood clothes, and these details are to be noticed in a striking afternoon gown worn by Jean Arthur in Colombia's new Frank Capra production, "Mr Smith Goes to Washington." Miss Arthur's dress is of black crepe, with exceptionally full skirt and long draped sleeves. The front of the bodice is gathered, while quantities of gold braid trimming, used with discretion, add a charming effect to the ensemble.
